Engineering a New Sense: Team HART Showcase

For the past year, HART has put a great deal of effort into creating awareness for human augmentation and developing the first application prototype. How can we substitute the hearing sense with vibrational patterns? What will be the next step? You are all welcome on November 26 at 12:30 pm CET to find out.

The event will take place in Blauwe Zaal, Auditorium at the TU/e campus. Unfortunately, the new COVID measures allow us to have a limited number of people there with us (the on-site tickets are offered on a first come - first serve basis). Human Augmentation

Human augmentation is a field of research that aims to enhance human abilities through medicine or technology. This vast field has numerous applications ranging from prosthetic exoskeletons and glasses to organ replacement. In the past, the main focus of human augmentation has been on creating medicine or surgically installing implants to enhance human abilities. Lately, however, augmented reality and interactive technologies have also enabled more non-invasive ways to enhance human capabilities.

Our mission

Human freedom is something HART fundamentally believes in. Throughout history, technological and cultural progress has freed up the human experience. We now have information at our fingertips and are free to express ourselves the way we want. However, the way in which we experience the world is still limited by the sensory receptors given to us at birth. HART envisions a future where the constraints of human biology dissolve, and new ways of experiencing the world arise by giving people freedom of experience.

HART’s first long term goal is tech-related - a platform that shows the possibility of human augmentation with some examples of applications while allowing others to build their own. Imagine a platform like the App Store, but instead of apps, anyone can download new senses for their haptic devices. The second goal is to raise awareness of the subject of human augmentation and bring it into the domain of public conversation. Since HART has won the TU/e contest, we now know the world is ready for and excited about our vision for the future!

Our proof of concept

Imagine this: you are on a trip to Japan, visiting an ancient temple in the remote mountains. You are immersing yourself in the foreign culture and learning more every moment, but you are held back by one barrier: the language barrier. With HART’s first product, we want to erase it.

Why does your technology work?

Our brains are locked in our skulls, where they don't "see" or "feel" anything of the outside world. All they receive is electro-chemical signals according to a certain pattern over and over again. From this complex interplay of signals, the brain is able to construct the way you experience reality. Amazingly, the concept of neuroplasticity suggests that it does not to matter to the brain where these signals come from as long as they arrive according to a certain pattern consistently. The neural networks in the brain simply adapt to the information they receive.

Why is your technology valuable?
  • Substite:

    First of all, we could start substituting senses. This has an obvious use-case for impaired people, such as those who are blind or deaf. The technology HART intends to develop could give these people a more complete experience of what is out there in the world and reduce the blockades they are currently faced with.

  • Immediate interpretation:

    Secondly, there is the point of immediate interpretation. But what does that mean? Well, while you're currently reading this, you don’t have to consciously think about the words you’re reading. You have enough experience to immediately interpret the meaning of the image you're seeing. What if we could extend this to other sources of data that you could learn to interpret in this way? Let’s say you’re a surgeon performing an operation. We could enable you to instantly interpret where exactly in the anatomy of a patient you're operating, or how you're to a tumor or a vein without having to physically look away from the procedure!

  • Experience data:

    Lastly, there is the point of experiencing data. In our current world, the amount of data is drastically increasing. We as humans mainly consume this data through screens. While the amount of data increases, our methods of comprehending it remain the same. But what if we could actually increase the amount of input that human beings are themselves able to process? We start applying Artificial Intelligence in a human centered way, in which we transition from the Internet of Things towards the Internet of Humans.

How long does it take to learn to use HART's technology?

Learning to use tactile senses to process other information, such as sound, can be a surprisingly quick process. An example of this is the 1991 feasibility study of Roland Mathijssen in which tactile stimuli showed an improvement in deaf person’s ability to perform lip reading within 5-10 hours of training. In order to see how this translates to what HART envisions, tests with the concept will have to be conducted.

What is it like to be a part of the team? How do I join?

Team HART currently consists of a highly diverse group of 13 students, studying in the fields of Applied physics, Mathematics & Computer Science, Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences, Industrial Design, and Mechanical Engineering. It is, therefore, no surprise that HART greatly values diversity and is eager to grow and become even more diverse.

HART’s structure and way of operating have been set up in alignment with a set of core values. We actively stimulate our members to grow towards these values; more specifically, we have defined what it means to be HART-working:

  • Responsible: Having an obligation to and care for the team and society as a whole, as part of one's job or role.

  • Innovative: Original and creative in thinking, both towards the product as well as the environment. We encourage an open-minded climate without fixed rules, giving our members ownership of the challenges while stimulating them to challenge the status quo.

  • Transparent: Openly and actively sharing information with each other.

  • Ambitious: Having or showing a strong desire and determination to succeed.

  • Diligent: Having or showing care and conscientiousness in one's work or duties.

In accordance with our core values we choose to operate in a responsibility-based structure. This structure takes shape in a working procedure where all members work towards our common goals, but their individual tasks and workload are taken up by themselves as opposed to being distributed to them by others.
